520 _a"Publisher's Note: Maternity, Newborn, and Women's Health is a comprehensive textbook for nursing students. The text is case-based with fictional characters drawn from experience playing both continuous and recurring roles. Case-based learning provides students with an explanatory context, helping them to retain information, encouraging them to think critically, and allowing them to apply what they are learning to clinical practice. The first unit, Scenarios for Clinical Preparation, is devoted to preconception-to-postpartum care of individuals with common pregnancy-related pathologies and sequelae. These chapters provide comprehensive scenarios for the entirety of these pregnancies, integrating normal progressions as well as common associated complications. The purpose of this unit is to provide early frontloading of content to prepare students for clinical. All chapters in the second unit, Kellie Bettencourt: The Uncomplicated Patient, pertain to one case. The remaining two units--Unit III:High-Risk Conditions and Complications, and Unit IV, Women's Health--provide comprehensive, traditionally organized content that integrates the patients of the first and second unit as recurrent characters in order to reinforce earlier study. When students read Unit III, the recurrent character from Unit I and Unit 2 will provide familiar content and aid in comprehension. As with clinical, it is the participation in many similar situations that facilitates learning, not just a single exposure to a patient. The book will take care to value context when making the new presentation of older information in order for it to be reinforcing and stimulating instead of just repetitive. With a goal of approaching the information in multiple ways, many innovative features are included to introduce a different perspective on the topic. For example, "Pop Quiz" analyzes commonly occurring plot points seen in popular media for accuracy; "Analyze the Evidence" provides accessible comparisons of contradictory research and practice; and "Step-by-Step Skills" provides the task-based information critical to nursing success and student confidence. All features are designed to be accessible, narratively compelling, conducive to curiosity and critical thinking, and to emphasize in-depth learning"--
